Welcome to our expat interview series!
In these articles, we interview both long-term and new expats in Argentina.
We ask them about what brought them here, what they like, and their recommendations.
What’s your name, country of origin, and how long have you been in Buenos Aires?
Amanda and Iván, United States, 1 year.
What brought you to Buenos Aires, and how was the initial adjustment process?
My husband, Ivan is originally from BA but left when he was 10.
We decided to move here with our 4-year-old son to have a better quality of life, be around more family, and offer our son a warmer culture to grow up in.
What’s been the most challenging aspect of living in Buenos Aires?
For me, learning Spanish has been incredibly important but also pretty trying.
I’ve been taking private lessons a few times a week which has really helped and I would consider myself abilities solidly conversational.
But making meaningful and deep friendships with Argentines without a fluent level of Spanish has been challenging.
And what has been the most rewarding aspect of living in Buenos Aires?
The quality of education we can offer our son has been so satisfying and the fact that he can grow up in such a warm and child-friendly culture has been one of the best aspects about our life here.
What’s your favorite local restaurant, bar, or cafe, and why?
Corte Charcutería in Belgrano.
The food is excellent, and it is open at all hours.
So if you’d like breakfast, or an early dinner (a rare option to find here in Buenos Aires) it’s great.
The vibe is really chill but also upscale.
What hidden gem in Buenos Aires deserves more recognition?
Parque Norte.
A huge sports and park facility in Nunez/Belgrano where you can easily rent tennis courts, soccer fields, and hang with friends without needing to be a member like most other clubs.
What advice would you give to new expats in Buenos Aires?
Learn Spanish. It really helps you live a fuller life here.
That’s it for this expat interview!
