Welcome to our expat interview series!

In these articles, we interview both long-term and new expats in Argentina.

We ask them about what brought them here, what they like, and their recommendations.

What’s your name, country of origin, and how long have you been in Buenos Aires?

My name is Alec and my fiancé’s name is Oscar.

We moved to Buenos Aires on January 1st from Los Angeles with our two adopted kittens.

What brought you to Buenos Aires, and how was the initial adjustment process?

The food! We’re big foodies and we couldn’t wait to try the asado and local wines.

Okay, besides the food we were also looking for a better quality of life and having the freedom to experience the joys of things we can’t afford in LA.

We adapted quickly and our cats have grown up in Buenos Aires!

What’s been the most challenging aspect of living in Buenos Aires?

Probably the fact that I don’t speak Spanish, but Oscar speaks fluently.

I’ve been taking Spanish lessons for months, but am still having a hard time learning a new language.

Oscar is Mexican American, and is used to Mexican Spanish, so it’s been an adjustment for him as well.

And what has been the most rewarding aspect of living in Buenos Aires?

Being able to enjoy going out to restaurants, nightlife, cinemas etc and having it be in our budget.

We also love the time difference here with our work!

I run a social media marketing agency and Oscar leads an advertising agency.

With most of our clients being in the U.S., the time difference has been great at improving our productivity and flexibility.

What’s your favorite local restaurant, bar, or cafe, and why?

We love Soma in Nuñez.

It’s a tiny Italian restaurant with handmade pastas to die for! I recommend the pumpkin ravioli dish.

The wine on tap bar literally called The Wine Bar has some great wines with a laid-back vibe.

If you’re looking for a date night and romantic vibe I love Piedra Pasillo Al Fondo (behind the restaurant).

It’s tucked away behind the restaurant and it’s a bar upstairs. The drinks are amazing and I’m in love with the interior design.

What hidden gem in Buenos Aires deserves more recognition?

Not sure if it’s “hidden” but Togni’s Pizza in Belgrano is THE best pizza we’ve had so far in Buenos Aires.

Highly recommend it.

What advice would you give to new expats in Buenos Aires?

I recommend finding a local Spanish teacher and taking weekly classes if you can’t speak Spanish.

It’s definitely needed and gives back to the community by hiring a local teacher.

Join all the local FB and WhatsApp groups you can find.

Get into the wellness scene here in Bs.As. by seeing some of the best osteopaths and holistic practices.

They’re so amazing!

That’s it for this expat interview!
