Welcome to our expat interview series!

In these articles, we interview both long-term and new expats in Argentina.

We ask them about what brought them here, what they like, and their recommendations.

What’s your name, country of origin, and how long have you been in Buenos Aires?

My name is Freddie, I’m from England and I’ve been in Buenos Aires for 9.5 years.

What brought you to Buenos Aires, and how was the initial adjustment process?

I originally moved here to work in a vineyard in Mendoza, after many years working in the wine industry in London.

I ended up switching careers and working as a personal trainer soon after my arrival.

I met a lot of my first friends via my classes, it was a really enjoyable period of my life as I had found a career that meant a lot to me and I had made a new group of friends in a foreign country.

I spoke no Spanish but after a few years, it started to improve.

What’s been the most challenging aspect of living in Buenos Aires?

The most challenging thing for me has been being so far from my family and friends in England.

I’ve always felt that I would like to return to live in London but the cost of living has kept me away for now.

And what has been the most rewarding aspect of living in Buenos Aires?

The most rewarding thing about my time here was meeting my wife and starting a family.

I’m very grateful to the city for allowing me to find a new career and the slower pace of life for giving me time to grow.

What’s your favorite local restaurant, bar, or cafe, and why?

I like Los Galgos, it’s a very Argentine bar downtown and I have some nice memories there.

What hidden gem in Buenos Aires deserves more recognition?

Perhaps the CCK cultural centre downtown, it’s a beautiful building and often has live music events and art shows.

What advice would you give to new expats in Buenos Aires?

Take advantage of the slower pace of life and try to focus on improving your health, physical and mental, while in this city.

That’s it for this expat interview!
