Argentina Citizenship by Investment Program: What We Know So Far

Argentina is opening a fresh chapter in its immigration and investment policy – one that offers an alternative route to citizenship for those willing to commit resources and talent to the country’s economy.

Here is what we know so far about the Argentina citizenship by investment program, what remains to be clarified, and how you might position yourself while the finer details fall into place.

What’s Driving This Change

At the heart of this initiative is a clear motivation: to attract investment, talent and economic activity to Argentina.

  • The government aims to bring substantial money injections into the real economy, spurring job creation and boosting industrial, agricultural, touristic and productive sectors.
  • Argentina wants to open itself wider to the world – inviting investors and professionals who see opportunity here: a land of vast nature, tourism potential, industrial scope and globally-recognised talent.
  • By offering citizenship under investment conditions, the country signals that it values more than just residency – it values meaningful contribution.

The Reform: What Changed Under Decreto 366

The reform introduced via Decreto 366/2025 (DNU 366) marks a significant shift in how citizenship can be obtained.

Key breakthroughs include:

  • Citizenship for minors: The decree stops imposing an age restriction, seemingly allowing minors to get citizenship.
  • Residency-time waiver for “relevant investment”: Traditionally, Argentina required a period of residency (and meeting other standard criteria). Under this reform, if you make a “relevant investment,” you no longer need to fulfill the usual residency time.
  • Procedure clarified: On the practical side, later in July the government issued Decreto 524/2025, which sheds light on how the process will work. The key steps: first invest → then a security/background report of the applicant → after clearance, the national immigration agency (Dirección Nacional de Migraciones) makes a decision.

These changes make the idea of “citizenship by investment” in Argentina both more concrete and more ambitious than before.

What We Don’t Know Yet  (And Why It Matters)

While the framework is in place, many vital details remain uncertain.

For anyone serious about this pathway, these are the questions you should keep on your radar:

  • How much must the investment be? There is no figure specified in the legislation or decree yet.
  • Can you commit to invest (rather than having invested already)? Can part-investments be accepted, or must the full amount be in place before application?
  • What types of investments will be accepted? Will real-estate count? Will business ventures, tech ventures, agricultural projects qualify?
  • Who is eligible to invest? Will it be open to all nationalities? Will there be nationality or source-of-fund restrictions because of money-laundering or security concerns?

Why do these matter? Because for you to assess risk and plan ahead you need predictability, reducing speculation as much as possible.

Myths & Rumours – And What’s Not True (Yet)

It’s tempting to rely on rumour, but it’s important to distinguish fact from scams or wishful thinking.

  • Rumour: the investment amount will be USD 500,000. False – this figure is nowhere in the law or decree.
  • Rumour: only the technology or agriculture sectors will qualify. Also false – there is currently no legal text specifying preferential sectors.

In short: if someone tells you the rules are “set” with a specific amount or sector, treat that as premature.

What You Can Do While We Wait

Although some details are still pending, there are proactive steps you can take now:

Final thoughts

This new citizenship-by-investment reform places Argentina in an interesting position globally.

For investors and high-net-worth individuals willing to engage with the jurisdiction and devote real capital and effort, the prospect of Argentine citizenship (and all that it may bring) is compelling.

But, as with all recent policy reforms, the devil will be in the implementation details.

Until those become clear, caution, due diligence and professional guidance are more important than ever.
